Although no one wants to hear it, you are not capable of doing anything you set your mind to. If you set your mind to jumping like Michael Jordan, chances are it is not going to happen. Some are just more gifted than others. However, there are a series of jumps and exercises you can to help achieve the highest vertical you are capable of reaching.
The first jump consists of you jumping off of the ground in rhythm by leaping off of your ankles. After leaving the ground you want to pull your toes up as far as possible while avoiding having your heels touch the ground. The difficult part with this jump is not allowing your knees to bend whatsoever while jumping or landing. As soon as you land, jump back up as quickly as possible to remain on the ground very little time.
The next jump you will need to find a box that is around the height of your vertical right now. For this exercise you will step off of the box and land as still as possible without allowing your heels to touch the ground. The goal is to land smooth and subtle with a little bend in your knees or in a deep squat position. Continue to increase the height of the box until your landings begin to appear rough.
Vertical jumps are the next kind of jump on your list to help you reach the highest vertical possible. The goal here is to jump as high as possible onto an object, jump off and then get back off the ground as quickly as possible. Jumping onto a stable box that you can raise up and land on is the best option.
Similar to vertical jumps is step stool jumps. For this you will need four or five step stools or boxes that vary in height. You want to start with the smallest box first and increase the height each one. As with vertical jumps, after leaping up onto the box and falling back down you want to get off of the ground as quickly as possible to the next box.
The final jump that can help you reach your goal for the highest vertical possible is a combination of vertical jumps and the second jump listed in this article. What you will do is step off of a box that is around your highest vertical. Once hitting the ground leap back up as high as you can. This allows you to learn how to embrace contact, how to explode quickly, and then how to go into a high vertical leap.
